Amy Rose Girls set for Leamington!
The Wessex Border Bowlers, made up of under 25 girls from Berkshire and Wiltshire, played
in the Regional Finals of the Amy Rose at Taunton BC on Sunday 14th June. They won 3 of their
4 games which put them second after Dorset, who won all of their matches. As they achieved
16 points with a very healthy shot difference this means that they should be on their way to
Leamington as one of the best runners-up from the 5 venues across the country. This is an
incredible achievement for a newly formed team!
The girls all played well and improved their game throughout the day. They kept their focus,
never gave up when down on the scoreboard and pulled off some incredible shots. The
successful pairing of Amelia Yeomans (Wiltshire) and Rosanna Brown (Berkshire)
contributed significantly to a solid shot difference and their success as well as their
enthusiasm generated confidence to the whole team. The triples team with Lacey Evans
(Berkshire), Louise Rose (Wiltshire) and Zoe Fletcher (Wiltshire) pulled back in their first
game against Devon to only lose by 1 shot but won their second game against
Gloucestershire by 1 shot. Unfortunately, one of the team who had been playing very well
throughout became ill and had to come off the green but Piper Evans (Berkshire) stepped in
as reserve playing the rest of the games. With Zoe Fletcher’s consistently great shots and
calm leadership of the two Evans sisters, the standard of play was raised throughout the rest
of the afternoon, particularly from Lacey Evans who had stepped up to play in second
position, and the triple went on to win against Somerset in the final match with an incredible
score of 18:6.
Well done to the whole squad and their supporters! A successful squad needs a committed
team and supportive reserves not only to cheer on their teammates but also to be prepared
to step up and play! We look forward to building up a strong Wessex squad over the next few
years and we encourage all young bowlers to get involved. It is a great opportunity to enjoy
playing with other under 25s in the practice sessions and learn from those more experienced
so that as the existing team gets older we have others coming through to take their place.
